Over 5,000 VABs (French: Véhicule de l'Avant Blindé = VAB / armored vehicle front) are in service in 14 countries on every continent. Traditionally built as a 4x4 (the only version used by the French Army), the VAB is often exported in a 6x6 version. Better off-road capability is the reason why African countries like Morocco and the Middle East chose this vehicle. This vehicle was frequently used in combat and for peacekeeping and restoration, particularly within the UN and NATO framework. In Bosnia, where 200 to 400 VABs were permanently present, the availability rate exceeded 90%, while maintenance was limited to routine interventions. A 300 hp engine and an automatic transmission allow the VAB to weigh 16 tons. As on the 4 x 4, numerous improvements have been made: a tire inflation and deflation system, reinforced configuration, modernized steering and dashboard.
