Product description
With figure The Renault 4CV was unveiled at the first post-war Paris Motor Show in October 1946 and celebrated its 80th anniversary in 2026. It became a symbol of the modern post-war Parisian woman and evolved into a genuine lifestyle vehicle during the 1950s. Developed amidst wartime air raids, this small "car for everyone"—designed by engineer Ferdinand Picard—was intended to embody a newfound freedom and a better life. Suitable for both families and city driving, and being robust, economical, and affordable, the 4 CV became the first French car to surpass the one-million production mark, with 1,105,547 units built over 14 years. The pre-production model shown at the 1946 motor show was painted sand-yellow, using paint stocks originally intended for the Afrika Korps. This distinctive hue earned the model the affectionate nickname "Butterstock" (or "Cremeschnittchen"—little cream slice—in Germany). At the 1948 Paris Motor Show, the 4 CV was the only passenger car presented in its "normal," finalized production form. Major changes were made to the 4 CV in 1954: it received a three-bar radiator grille, the spare wheel was relocated to the engine compartment, and the rear bench seat was shifted slightly backward. Power was provided by a water-cooled, rear-mounted four-cylinder engine with a displacement of approximately 750 cc, delivering between 17 and 33 hp depending on the version. The final 4 CV rolled off the production line on July 6, 1961, as the model was succeeded by the more modern Renault 4 (R4).
