F-16 is a multi-role fighter aircraft originally developed for the United States Air Force (USAF). Originally designed as a day fighter for air superiority, it evolved into a successful all-weather multi-role aircraft. Over 4,600 aircraft have been built since 1976. Although the USAF is no longer receiving any further aircraft, upgraded versions are being built for export customers.
The F-16 was manufactured as part of a consortium established between the United States and the four NATO countries: Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands and Norway. Together with the United States, they initially produced 348 F-16s for their air forces. Final assembly of the airframes took place in Belgium and the Netherlands.
The components for the F-16 were manufactured in all five countries. Belgium also carried out the final assembly of the F100 engine, which was used in the European F-16s. This increases the supply and availability of spare parts in Europe and improves the operational readiness of the F-16.
