The Alfasud (Alfa Romeo Sud/Southern Italy) got its name because it was produced at the Pomigliano d'Arco plant in southern Italy.
It was a pivotal vehicle in Alfa Romeo's history. First unveiled at the 1971 Turin Motor Show, it was the brand's first compact car, featuring front-wheel drive, a sport-tuned suspension, and a high-revving boxer engine. It was intended to be a "people's car" while simultaneously embodying the sporty "Cuore Sportivo" (Sporting Heart) character. Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, its lines and functional elegance gave the Alfasud a timeless form. Dynamic and low-slung, with a large hatchback, it was ahead of its time. Despite its well-known rust issues, the Alfasud is considered a significant milestone in Alfa Romeo's history, where even compact cars embodied character, sound, and passion.
