Product description
In the late 1970s and early 1980s, the Lancia Beta Montecarlo Turbo dominated the Group 5 category of the World Sportscar Championship. Designed as a thoroughbred silhouette racer, the car concealed state-of-the-art racing technology beneath its distinctive bodywork. The machine was powered by a legendary 1.4-liter Abarth turbo engine that delivered an impressive output of up to 480 hp.
Lancia developed various aerodynamic configurations. The legendary "Short Tail" version was specifically optimized for twisty tracks and sprint races. By eliminating the extended rear section, the bodywork ended just behind the rear wheels, this saved weight, improved downforce, and made the vehicle extremely agile and maneuverable through tight sections.
A highlight in the car's racing history was its participation in the 1979 Giro d'Italia Automobilistico. This unique Italian multi-stage race was a grueling test for both driver and machine, combining classic circuit racing at famous venues like Monza and Misano with challenging hill-climb stages on closed public roads.
For this spectacular event, Lancia entered the Beta Montecarlo Turbo wearing the white, red, and green Alitalia livery and bearing race number 576. The cockpit was shared by an all-star lineup from the world of motorsport: Formula 1 star Gilles Villeneuve and the legendary rally duo of Walter Röhrl and Christian Geistdörfer. This combination of circuit-racing aggression and rally precision perfectly complemented the characteristics of the Short Tail, making the vehicle one of the most fascinating milestones in Lancia's motorsport history.
